This is an important feature - it allows processes bigger than the ~2GB process size limit imposed by 32-bit operating systems. Large memory processes are likely when training untied context-dependent model sets just prior to clustering - I typically see ~4GB processes during this stage of model training. There are some tricks to get memory usage down, but it's a lot simpler to run on a 64 bit machine.
